A Nine-Year-Old’s Lemonade Stand Filled a Shelter’s Pantry
She asked for donations instead of money. Four hundred pounds of food later, the shelter had to send a van.

She set the stand up at the end of the drive with a hand-lettered sign and one unusual rule: the lemonade was free, but if you wanted some, you brought a bag of pet food.
Her parents expected a quiet Saturday. By the third weekend the shelter was sending a van.
The final count was a little over four hundred pounds of food, most of it from neighbours who had never set foot in the shelter and now know where it is.
Shelters run short of food far more often than they run short of goodwill. Almost all of them keep a public wish list, and almost none of them are shy about what is on it.
