A hiker carrying a german shepherd mix down a forest trail

A Hiker Carried an Injured Shepherd Four Miles Down the Mountain

Nobody could reach the trailhead before dark. So he put the dog on his back and started walking.

The shepherd mix had torn a pad open on loose rock near the summit and could not put weight on the leg. Her owner was two hours from the trailhead with no signal and no way to carry sixty-five pounds of dog.

Another hiker coming down stopped, emptied his pack, and worked out a sling from a rain shell and two lengths of webbing.

It took them just under four hours. They reached the car a little after nine at night.

The dog needed eleven stitches and a fortnight of short, boring walks. Her owner has been trying to find the hiker ever since; all she got was a first name.
